Artificial turf lawnsArtificial turf installation in St. George, UT
True Turf installs artificial turf lawns around St. George, starting with a compacted base and drainage, which matter a lot on local caliche and clay. Two Southern Utah installers publish $8 to $15 per square foot installed23. Turf alone won't earn the county rebate (see why), so weigh it on water, upkeep and use. Call (435) 660-6207; True Turf calls back within 30 minutes during business hours.

Which kind of turf lawn fits your yard?
Turf products differ in blade height, density and backing, and the right one depends on how you'll use the space. True Turf will match a product to your yard. Ask them to bring samples to the visit so you can see and feel the difference.
Family play lawn
When it fits: Backyards where kids run, play and throw a ball every day.
Pick a sturdy turf and put it where afternoon shade falls, since sun is what heats turf.
Pet area or dog run
When it fits: Yards where dogs do their business.
Drainage matters more than looks here. See pet turf and dog runs.
Front-yard accent lawn
When it fits: A small green panel for curb appeal.
On new St. George homes, at least 30% of the front yard must be landscaped, and at least half of that must be live plants1. Turf usually shares the front with plant beds and rock.
Putting green
When it fits: Golfers who want to practice at home.
Uses a short, dense putting turf over a carefully shaped base. See backyard putting greens.
Turf mixed with pavers and rock
When it fits: Yards that need a path, a patio and planters as well as a green spot.
Pavers set into turf make a firm stepping path, and rock beds hold the plants. Edging keeps each material in its place.

What moves the price
- Base depth and compaction, the hidden layer that keeps turf flat and draining
- Removing old grass, roots and soil, and hauling it all away
- Drainage work where caliche or clay holds water5
- Access: a narrow side gate means more of the work is done by hand
- Layout: curves, tree wells, slopes and seams add cutting and labor2
- Turf grade: blade height, density and backing change the material price

Local conditions
St. George conditions that change a turf job
Turf here goes down on hard, slow-draining ground and has to handle hot sun and sudden summer storms. These local facts shape the base, the drainage and where turf makes sense.
Caliche under many yards
Caliche is a hard layer of calcium carbonate found across virtually all of Washington County, usually 6 to 36 inches down5. When it's dense, water can't soak through, so it pools on top5. That's why the base and drainage plan matters more than the turf you pick.
Clay on new-construction lots
Yards around new homes often end up with clay subsoil on top. Clay takes in water slowly, about 0.01 to 0.5 inches an hour6. A turf base on clay needs a planned path for storm water to leave the yard.
Short, heavy summer storms
St. George gets only 8.18 inches of rain a year, but July and August average 0.66 and 0.74 inches, up from 0.19 in June7. Monsoon bursts like these need a base that drains fast, so water doesn't sit under the turf.
Sun and heat
St. George's average July high is 101.6°F7. Penn State researchers found synthetic turf generally runs 35 to 55°F hotter than natural grass in sun8. Put play turf where afternoon shade falls, and read the turf heat guide.
Lawn limits on new homes
On new St. George homes, natural lawn is capped at 8% of the lot, up to 1,500 square feet on lots up to 20,000 square feet. Lawn isn't allowed in park strips, in strips under 8 feet wide or on slopes over 15%1. The water district's standards say permeable turf may count as mulch, not lawn9. See St. George lawn rules.

Will the water district pay me to swap my lawn for turf?
No, not for turf alone. Asked about an incentive for replacing a lawn with artificial turf, the district answers "Not exactly"4. Permeable turf can count as mulch inside a conversion with 50% living plant cover at maturity and drip irrigation. The converted area also goes under a permanent easement10. Check eligibility with the district before you start; pre-approval is required. See the rebate guide.
Can turf go right over my old grass?
No. Turf goes over a built base, not over living grass. The grass, roots and a few inches of soil come out first, and a compacted base goes in their place2. True Turf builds the base and drainage before any turf goes down. The free visit is when they check what's in the ground now.
Will turf work on a sloped or rocky lot?
Usually, but slope and rock add work and cost. Caliche can sit as shallow as 6 inches5. Some lots in Hurricane, La Verkin and Toquerville sit right on basalt that has to be drilled instead of dug5. Steep spots also need a base that won't wash out in a storm. True Turf checks the grade and the ground at the free visit.
How long does artificial turf last?
One local installer publishes 10 to 25 years, depending on quality and care3, and a St. George cost guide says 15 to 20 years is typical in Utah2. Sun, foot traffic, pets and the quality of the base all move that number. Ask True Turf what warranty comes with the turf they recommend, and get it in writing.
Does artificial turf really save water?
Yes. Turf doesn't need routine irrigation2, so the water a lawn needed is saved. That counts here, since the water district calls Washington County the driest county in Utah11. Turf still needs a rinse now and then for dust and pets. For comparison, the district says a typical lawn conversion can save up to $300 a year in water costs4.
Can my HOA stop me from putting in turf?
Maybe. Utah law stops an HOA from banning water-wise landscaping on a detached home's lot. But the HOA can still require a site plan review and set design rules, including limits on mulches it considers detrimental to its operations12. The law doesn't name artificial turf, so read your HOA's rules and get approval before work starts.
My new home can barely have any grass. Can I add turf?
Most likely. The district's water efficiency standards cap natural lawn on new homes but say permeable turf may count as mulch9. In neighborhoods built to the district's Ultra standards, irrigated lawn isn't allowed at all, and those rules live in the HOA's CC&Rs13. Read your HOA's rules first, then talk with True Turf about where turf should go.
