Turf for dogsPet turf and dog runs in St. George, UT

Pet turf works when urine drains straight through. That's why True Turf builds pet areas on at least 4 inches of compacted base, per their published FAQ. One St. George turf site puts pet builds at the high end of turf prices because of drainage and infill2. Mind the summer heat on paws. Call (435) 660-6207; True Turf calls back within 30 minutes during business hours.

Pet turf setups and when each one fits

Where your dog goes, and how often, decides the setup. Start with drainage, then think about sun, shade and how you'll clean it. Pairing pet turf with decorative rock can make a layout that's easy to rinse.

  • Side-yard dog run

When it fits: Narrow side yards where dogs go out to do their business.

Plan where rinse water will go, since side yards often sit between a wall and the house.

  • Whole pet-friendly backyard

When it fits: Dogs and kids share the whole yard.

Use the same draining base everywhere the dog goes, not just in one corner.

  • Potty zone framed by rock

When it fits: You want waste in one spot that's easy to hose off.

A small turf patch near a hose bib, with rock around it, keeps cleanup quick.

  • Shaded play patch

When it fits: Dogs that spend long afternoons outside.

Put the turf where a tree or the house shades it after lunch, since full sun is what heats turf.

Local conditions

St. George facts that matter for pet turf

Hot sun and hard, slow-draining ground are the two big local issues for a dog area.

  • Hot paws

St. George's average July high is 101.6°F5, and synthetic turf generally runs 35 to 55°F hotter than natural grass in sun4. Touch the turf with your hand before you let a dog out on a summer afternoon.

  • A rinse cools turf for minutes

In one study Penn State cites, watering dropped turf from 174°F to 85°F, but it was back to 120°F five minutes later4. Rinse to clean, and count on shade to cool.

  • Infill changes the heat

In Penn State lab tests, TPE infill measured 136.4°F after an hour under a heat lamp, while black rubber reached 156.0°F4. Ask True Turf which infill they suggest for a dog area and why.

  • Caliche can trap urine

Dense caliche is nearly impermeable, so water pools on top of it3. Under a dog run, anything that pools will smell, which is why drainage comes before turf.

  • Layers must let water through

In district rebate conversions, impermeable weed barriers are banned6, and any barrier used must be permeable, like fabric or mesh7. Under pet turf, a solid sheet would hold urine in, too.

Questions people ask

Still wondering? Call (435) 660-6207 and ask True Turf.

Will pet turf smell?

It can, if urine sits in the turf or the base. Smell builds when liquid can't drain away or isn't rinsed off. A compacted base that drains, no solid sheet under the turf, and regular rinsing all help, especially in summer. Ask True Turf which turf and infill they recommend for odor in a pet area.

How do I clean artificial turf after my dog uses it?

Pick up solid waste right away, then hose down urine spots, more often in hot weather. Some installers advise an enzyme cleaner for pet areas, plus more frequent rinsing1. Brush the fibers every so often so they stand back up. Check with True Turf before you use any cleaner on their turf.

How do I keep my dog comfortable on turf in summer?

Plan shade and timing. Turf can run 35 to 55°F hotter than grass in sun4, so give your dog shaded spots and keep fresh water out. Save turf play for mornings and evenings, when the surface is cooler. Read the turf heat guide for the research and for tips on where to put turf.

What goes under a dog run?

A compacted base that lets urine drain down and away. True Turf's FAQ says pet areas get at least 4 inches of it. Where clay sits near the surface, water soaks in slowly, at 0.01 to 0.5 inches an hour8. The free visit is when True Turf checks whether extra drainage work is needed.

Can I get the water rebate for a dog run?

Not for the turf alone. Permeable turf can count as mulch inside a district conversion, but that conversion still needs 50% living plant cover at maturity and drip irrigation6. Check eligibility with the district before you start; pre-approval is required before any grass comes out. See how the rebate really works.

Will my HOA allow a turf dog run?

Check first. Utah law keeps HOAs from banning water-wise landscaping on a detached home's lot. They can still require a site plan review and set design rules, though9. The law doesn't mention artificial turf, so get your HOA's approval in writing before work starts, then share it with True Turf.
