Landscape rockDecorative landscape rock in St. George, UT
True Turf lays decorative rock for beds, paths and borders around turf, in sizes from small gravel up to boulders. In a district rebate conversion, rock counts as mulch and must be at least 2 inches deep2. Rock alone won't earn the rebate, though: living plants still have to cover half the area. Call (435) 660-6207 to plan yours.

Options
Rock sizes and where each one fits
Rock is sold by size and color. Small rock packs into a firmer surface, while bigger stones stay put on slopes and in drainage paths. For the colors and sizes True Turf offers, see landscape rock colors.
Pea gravel and 3/8 inch rock
When it fits: Paths, seating areas and the gaps between pavers.
Small stones make a smoother surface to walk on than big rock.
1/2 inch to 1 inch rock
When it fits: Planting beds and general ground cover.
Spreads evenly around plants and drip lines, and it's easy to rake level.
2 to 4 inch cobble
When it fits: Dry creek beds, downspout outlets and the edges of slopes.
Heavier stones are less likely to wash out in a summer storm.
Boulders and accent rock
When it fits: Focal points and natural-looking edges.
Big stones need room for equipment to set them, so check access early.
Color blends
When it fits: Matching your house, the red rock around you, or HOA rules.
Look at samples in daylight next to your stucco or trim before you choose.

Cost
What decorative rock costs
We didn't find a published St. George price for rock installation when we checked in October 2026. The water district's estimate for a full conversion includes rock, plants and drip. Use it as a rough guide for a whole yard, not for rock alone.
| Item | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion by a contractor (rock, plants, drip) | $4 to $6 per sq ft | The district's own estimate for a whole water-efficient conversion1 |
| District incentive inside a qualifying conversion | $2 per sq ft, plus a temporary $1 on the first 1,000 sq ft | Rock alone doesn't qualify; plants must reach 50% cover2 |
| True Turf's minimum job | $3,000 | The smallest project True Turf takes |
Prices last reviewed October 2026. See how water-wise rebates work.
What moves the price
- Area and depth: deeper rock means more tons to buy and spread
- Rock size and color, and how far it has to travel
- Removing old grass or rock first
- Edging to keep rock out of the turf and off the pavers
- Weed control: permeable fabric, or none at all1
- Access for trucks and equipment

Local conditions
Rules and conditions for rock here
Rock does real work in a desert yard, and in a rebate project it has to meet specific rules.
What mulch does
The water district says mulch protects soil from drying sun and wind. It holds back weeds that compete with plants for water, and it evens out soil temperature, which protects plants from extreme temperatures1.
Depth for a rebate project
District conversions need at least 2 inches of mulch, such as rock, bark, ungrouted pavers or permeable turf2. The state program in Cedar City and Enoch asks for 2 to 4 inches of permeable gravel, rock or bark3.
Weed barrier rules
Impermeable weed barriers are prohibited in district conversions2, and any barrier you use must be permeable, like fabric or mesh1.
Rock still needs plants
Rock is mulch, not a whole landscape. Converted areas need 50% living plant cover at maturity2, and new St. George homes need live plants in at least half of the landscaped front yard area4. See desert landscaping for the plant math.
Storms can move small rock
July and August are St. George's wettest summer months, averaging 0.66 and 0.74 inches of rain5. Heavy bursts can wash small rock out of downspout paths, so use larger cobble where water flows.

How deep should landscape rock be?
At least 2 inches in a district rebate project2, and 2 to 4 inches under the state program in Cedar City and Enoch3. Outside a rebate project, the same range is a sensible target, since the district says a few inches of mulch usually keeps weeds down1.
How much rock do I need for my yard?
About 1 cubic yard for every 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, or every 108 square feet at 3 inches. That's simple math, since a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Plan a little extra for low spots, or let True Turf measure the areas and figure the amount at the free visit.
Can I swap my lawn for rock and get the rebate?
Only as part of a full conversion. Rock is mulch, and the converted area still needs 50% living plant cover at maturity and drip irrigation2. The grass must still be alive when the district visits, so check eligibility and get pre-approval before you touch it1. See the rebate guide.
What rock color should I pick?
Pick a color that suits your house and the red rock around it, then check your HOA's rules. Utah law lets an HOA restrict mulches it considers detrimental to its operations6, so ask before you order. Look at samples in daylight, next to your stucco or trim, before you decide.
