What goes into a backyard putting green?
A green is more than short turf. The shape, the breaks, the cups and the edge all change how it plays and what it costs. Bring your putter to the free visit and talk through how you like to practice.
Single-cup practice green
When it fits: Small yards, side yards and tighter budgets.
One cup with a gentle break still gives you different putts from different spots around it.
Multi-cup green
When it fits: Golfers who want longer lag putts and more reads.
More cups and more contours mean more base shaping, so the price climbs with them.
Contours and breaks
When it fits: You want putts that curve like they do on a course.
Breaks are shaped into the compacted base before the turf goes down, so decide on them early.
Fringe and edging
When it fits: Almost every green.
A taller fringe frames the green and blends it into turf lawn, rock or pavers. Edging keeps the border clean.
Cups and flags
When it fits: Every green.
A regulation hole is 4 1/4 inches across and at least 4 inches deep1. Ask True Turf how many cups fit your layout.

Local conditions
Local conditions that change a putting green
Heat, storms and hard ground all affect how a green is built here and when you'll want to use it.
Afternoon heat
St. George's average July high is 101.6°F6. Synthetic surfaces get hottest on sunny, low-humidity days between noon and 3 PM7, so mornings and evenings are the comfortable times to putt.
Water cools turf only briefly
In one study Penn State cites, watering dropped turf from 174°F to 85°F, but it was back to 120°F five minutes later7. Shade works longer: the water district says shading keeps areas up to 25 degrees cooler8.
Storm water
July and August average 0.66 and 0.74 inches of rain in St. George, up from 0.19 in June6. A green's base has to drain those bursts so water doesn't sit on the putting surface.
Hard ground
Caliche is present across virtually all of Washington County, and the most common layers in St. George yards are 4 to 12 inches thick and often need a hydraulic breaker4. Shaping breaks on that ground takes more prep.
Lawn limits on new homes
New St. George homes can have natural lawn on only 8% of the lot, up to 1,500 square feet on most lots9. The water district's standards say permeable turf may count as mulch, not lawn10. See St. George lawn rules for your lot.

Putting turf
How much does a backyard putting green cost in St. George?
One Utah turf company publishes about $12 to $16 per square foot for a basic installed green2, and a St. George site lists about $14 to $22 for custom greens3. Cups, contours and ground prep move the price. True Turf's minimum job is $3,000, and you'll get a firm number after the free on-site visit.
Is a putting green too hot to use in summer?
On a July afternoon, it can be. Synthetic turf generally runs 35 to 55°F hotter than natural grass in sun7. Penn State's summary also cites a BYU guideline of no use above 120°F7. Plan to putt in the morning or evening, and place the green where it gets shade later in the day. More in the turf heat guide.
Can a putting green go in my front yard?
It can, but plan around the front-yard rule for new homes. In St. George, at least 30% of the front yard must be landscaped, and at least half of that must be live plants9. A small green beside planted beds can work within that. Check your HOA's rules too, and ask True Turf to sketch a few layouts.
What upkeep does a turf putting green need?
Light, regular care. Clear leaves and debris, brush the turf now and then so the fibers stand up, and rinse off dust5. Infill may need topping up every few years, depending on how much the green gets used5. Ask True Turf what care their putting turf needs, since products differ.
Can a putting green be part of a rebate conversion?
Only as mulch inside a project that meets every rule. The district accepts permeable turf in place of mulch, but its plant cover and drip irrigation rules still apply8. The converted area needs 50% living plant cover at maturity11. Pre-approval is required, so apply before you remove grass. The rebate guide explains the math.
