Which paver project fits your yard?

Pavers come as small brick shapes, multi-piece sets laid in random patterns, and large square slabs. Ask True Turf to bring colors and samples to the free visit. If you're redoing the whole yard, start with a landscape plan.

  • Patio

When it fits: A flat, firm spot for a table, chairs or a grill.

Size it for the furniture you'll actually use, plus room to walk around it.

  • Walkway or path

When it fits: From a gate, driveway or door to the backyard.

Curves look softer, but every curve is a row of cut pavers, which adds cost1.

  • Steps

When it fits: Slopes and changes in level.

Each step needs a firm base under it, so slope and rocky ground add digging.

  • Pavers set into turf

When it fits: Stepping paths across an artificial turf lawn.

Strips of turf between the pavers keep the green look and give you a firm place to walk.

  • Ungrouted pavers in a rebate project

When it fits: You're converting lawn and want a path or patio inside the converted area.

Ungrouted pavers or flagstone that let water and air through can count as mulch, but drip and plant cover rules still apply2.

What moves the price

  • Access: hauling everything through a narrow gate by wheelbarrow can double the labor hours1
  • Pattern: herringbone and other busy patterns mean more cuts and more waste1
  • Material: natural stone and porcelain cost more than standard concrete pavers1
  • Curves, steps and level changes
  • Base depth, compaction and drainage
  • Tearing out old concrete, rock or grass

Local conditions

Local facts that shape a paver job

The ground and the rules here both change how a patio or path gets built.

  • Caliche and red clay

Caliche is present across virtually all of Washington County, typically 6 to 36 inches down, and dense layers barely drain3. New-construction yards often have clay at the surface, which takes in water slowly4. A patio base needs a planned path for water.

  • Pavers and concrete in a rebate

In a district conversion, concrete and other impermeable surfaces are deducted from the area that earns the incentive5. Ungrouted pavers that pass water and air can count as mulch instead2. Pre-approval is required; see the rebate guide.

  • Locate utilities before digging

Utah law requires anyone excavating to notify underground utility owners at least 48 hours before digging starts6. Blue Stakes of Utah 811 takes those requests for free7. Ask True Turf to confirm the locate request is in.

  • Colder winters in Cedar City

The Cedar City airport averages a January low of 17.2°F and 45.1 inches of snow a year8, while St. George averages 3.1 inches of snow9. In Cedar City and Enoch, ask about base depth for freeze and thaw.

Questions people ask

Still wondering? Call (435) 660-6207 and ask True Turf.

How much does a paver patio cost in St. George?

We couldn't find published St. George prices, so start with Utah figures. One paver company lists $18 to $32 per square foot installed for 2026, or $7,200 to $12,800 for a 400 square foot patio1. It also says St. George projects can use somewhat less base than the Wasatch Front1. True Turf's minimum job is $3,000.

Can pavers sit right next to artificial turf?

Yes. Pavers can border turf or be set into it as stepping stones, with strips of turf in the gaps. Edging between the two keeps the turf edge tidy and keeps rock and base from creeping where they shouldn't. Landscape edging is one of True Turf's services, so ask which type suits your layout.

Do pavers count toward the county water rebate?

Only inside a conversion that meets every rule. The district counts ungrouted pavers or flagstone that let water and air through as mulch2. You still need drip irrigation and 50% plant cover2. Concrete gets deducted from the incentive area5. Check eligibility with the district before you start; pre-approval is required.

Should I choose pavers or a poured concrete patio?

Pavers make more sense if the patio sits inside a rebate conversion. Ungrouted pavers can count as mulch in a district conversion, while concrete is deducted from the area that earns the incentive5. Pavers can also be lifted and reset if the ground settles or a line under them needs a repair later.

Does my HOA need to approve a new patio?

Check your HOA's rules before you start. Utah law lets an HOA require a site plan review before water-wise landscaping goes in, and set its own design rules for it10. Bring your HOA's design rules to the free visit so True Turf can plan a patio that fits them.

Can a patio go where my grass is now?

Yes, but decide on the rebate before you remove any grass. The district needs living grass at its pre-conversion visit, and starting before approval makes the project ineligible2. If you're not applying for the rebate, True Turf can plan the patio at the free visit and talk through taking out the grass first.
